It’s still a little bizarre that here were are, years into the culture-consuming Game of Thrones phenomenon, and there still hasn’t been a proper AAA video game adaptation for fanbase to sink its teeth into. Sure, we’ve had a Telltale game, a previous-generation debacle, some mobile games and some excellent mods, but nothing along the lines of the kind of open world or strategy games that the property seems to lend itself to. It’s why this morning’s tease is, at first, particularly exciting. Microsoft just tweeted out a short image that doesn’t contain much specific information, but it does contain enough to get the rumor mill churning.

There’s no information here except general Game of Thrones heraldry: we have the dragon skin, the Targaryen flames and little else to go on. Crucially, we don’t even know what’s being teased. Everyone’s
It’s pleasant to think we might be getting a full-scale game, and it’s not impossible to think that we are. Microsoft is going hard in on exclusives these days, and dishing out the money for the Game of Thrones license would be far from an out-of-character move. But the timing
I think it’s a lot more likely that we’re going to see a limited edition Xbox, which is the sort of thing we’ve seen teasers like this before. And limited edition Xboxes are fun, but not nearly so exciting as a full game. The image even looks a little bit like one of the more elaborate pieces of custom hardware we’ve seen in the past: I feel like I can almost see the corner of a black box just at the bottom the teaser trailer.
Maybe it’s a game? That would be great news, no doubt. The expansive, confusing world of Game of Thrones has caused it some problems for the show, but it would be a perfect fit for a Witcher-style open world romp. If we see that anytime soon, I’d be shocked. But I’ve been shocked before.
