Microsoft drop the ‘Surface Connect’ port in the upcoming Surface Pro 7 and replace it with USB-C? That’s the interesting case being put by analysts following publication of the latest Microsoft patents.

Tucked away in the ‘Multi-Panel Computing Device Having Integrated Magnetic Coupling Structres’ patent, are images and descriptions of Surface hardware, and these descriptions highlight a USB-C connector for power and peripherals, not the proprietary Surface Connect bladed connector familiar to many Surface Pro users.

This would not be the first of the Surface convertibles to jump to USB-C – the Surface Go switched to the more popular and prevalent USB-C connector when it was launched –

but it would be the first of the professional Surface platforms to make that decision.

As always it is worth noting that the inclusion of technology in a patent does not mean that it will make its way to production hardware, but in the case of a move to USB-C, I think that the time is right for Microsoft to make the jump away from its proprietary port. The process has already started on the Surface Go, and a look at other Windows 10 laptops and desk-bound hardware shows that a mixture of USB-A for legacy devices and USB-C for power and modern connectivity is in demand.

If the Surface family is to represent the cutting edge choices facing modern computing then it really is time for Microsoft to embrace USB-C in the Surface Pro family. With the Pro 7 expected to be announced in October, I’m expecting to hear more from the supply chain regarding the ultraportable’s ports very soon.

Now read more about the updates to the Surface Book 2 and Surface Pro 6 for the summer…
